York History in Pictures

Welcome to York History in Pictures

Here you will find photographs of York history from Roman times up until the present day. I concede that the text provided with the photographs gives only a brief glimpse of the history of the subject shown but hopefully it will be of interest.

Although York History in Pictures is directed towards visitors to our beautiful city of York the site is not intended to be a tourism guide. Click the 'Links and Contacts' button for tourism information. Clicking any of the other buttons below 'Contents' will take you to the appropriate section. (Please note that the Adobe Flash Player needs to be present to operate the buttons. Flash Player can be downloaded for free from the Adobe site if, in the unlikely event, Flash is not present on your PC running Windows. Unfortunately Apple Mac users you will not have Flash Player. If you have a Mac or you do NOT have FlashPlayer on a Windows machine and you do NOT wish to install it click here for links to a list of York History in Pictures sections. I will take some time shortly to update this index page and remove the need for Flash)

The photographs in York History in Pictures are my own work as a very amateur photographer. I however would ask you to respect my copyright of the pictures. (A small number of photographs in the 'Roman' section were taken, with permission, in the undercroft of the York Minster. These pictures remain the copyright of the Dean and Chapter.)

A few larger photographs can be found by clicking the 'Larger version of some images' button.

The York History in Pictures is split in to a number of different history time frames or areas of interest but it is appreciated that the photographs only scratch the surface of York history. The 'Snickelways' project is complete. This unusual term was coined by Mark W Jones for his book 'A Walk around the Snickelways of York'. (This excellent little book prompted further picture taking and is well worth a read.)

Thanks to all who have found the time to send me comments about the site in 2011. If you have a particular interest in the history of York and/or you feel photographs should be included in York History in Pictures which I've missed, please drop me a note!

Best wishes to all visitors for 2012

John
